This might possibly be the best anime i've ever watched. I have seen 23 out of 37 episodes so far. I actually got no sleep for work the one day, because this anime kept me watching through the night.
Why is this anime good?
It has an excellent storyline. A good development of characters. All the voice actors are good. No unnecessary episodes, with fillers and shit like that. And also the main character is the bad guy, which is a unique perspective.
From episode 1 i was hooked. After each episode I wanted to watch another.
What is this anime about?
Without spoiling too much of the storyline for you, the anime is about a high school boy that finds and picks up a book called Death Note. After experimenting with it, he finds out he can kill anyone with the book as long as he has the person's name and knows what the person looks like. After killing some people, the world's best detective L comes into the picture. He is intent on tracking down Light(the main character), and it becomes a battle of wits, and trying to keep each other's identity a secret, because if either of them found out the other's identity, that would be the end of the one with the indentity that was found out.
What makes this better than other anime?
I don't have an actual explanation for it. The anime has me hooked, and I am awaiting new releases now each week. You'd have to watch it and see if you like it as much as me.
After I watch the rest of the series, I think I'll pick up the manga if it continues further on than the anime.

I wouldn't say it's the best ever, the ending sucked. Everything up to the last ep was amazing. Then again, how do you keep that kind of velocity up the entire series, I guess there had to be a downer.

the ending does suck. as do most series ending though. berserk? gto? pretty shitty endings. i am watching another one right now that is pretty close to death note. its called code geass.
